The COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the largest threats in recent history and has caused significant disruptions to people’s lives, resulting in changes to how people travel internationally.

Since 2019, the HKSAR Government has imposed travel restrictions, likewise in other countries and regions. Pursuant to the Prevention and Control of Disease Ordinance (Cap. 599) the Government has mandated a COVID-19 nucleic acid test for all inbound travellers at the Hong Kong International Airport.

COVID-19 sampling at the Hong Kong International Airport is conducted at the Temporary Specimen Collection Centre, set up by the Department of Health. A customised traffic system was developed to tackle the issue of manpower costs and the expansion of the operation. This solution increased the operating efficiency while reducing labour costs.

In addition to the traffic system, an electronic record keeping system was developed to keep track of where tests were done in which booths throughout the day, facilitating disinfection work and other administrative tasks.
